It’s a little known fact that the Earl Grey who gave his name to Earl Grey Tea was Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1830 to 1834. Coincidentally, during this time gin palaces were becoming popular in London, described by Charles Dickens as “perfectly dazzling when contrasted with the darkness and dirt we have just left…”.
The second Earl Grey studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, the same college which saw Prince Charles graduate in 1970. With all this in mind we thought it only right that he be commemorated by The Cambridge Distillery. As such, we have sourced the finest Earl Grey Tea we could find – Darjeeling from the foothills of the Himalayas flavoured with Bergamot orange from Southern Italy.
Macerated for eight weeks and distilled under vacuum (as with all our botanicals), the Earl Grey distillate has proven our most popular yet. Delicate, sweet citrus character with a slightly oily body provides a luxurious full-bodied texture. It’s a delicious flavour in its own right, but when blended with juniper and coriander the orange character really shines, softening dryness and adding depth.
